Description
Lyburn Farm – Farmhouse Cheese on the Edge of the New Forest
Lyburn Farm is a family-run working farm and farmhouse cheesemaker in Landford, on the northern edge of the New Forest, producing artisan cheese using milk from its own cows.
The Smales family has a long history of dairy farming, with cows milked by the family since 1952. They took on Lyburn Farm in 1969, and today the farm combines dairy farming and cheesemaking with growing pumpkins and organic vegetables.
If you love discovering local food producers, farm shops and Hampshire's food and drink scene, Lyburn Farm is certainly one to have on your radar.
Cheese made right here on the farm
What makes Lyburn particularly special is the connection between the cows, the milk and the finished cheese.
The cheeses are made at the farm using the farm's own pasteurised cows' milk and vegetarian rennet.
Cheesemaking starts early in the morning after the cows have been milked. Around 3,000 litres of milk can be pasteurised before the cheesemaker begins turning it into curds.
By lunchtime, milk that was in the cow that morning can already be cheese. The cheeses then begin the much longer process of maturing and developing their flavour.
At any one time, Lyburn can have around 10,000 cheeses maturing at the farm.
Discover Lyburn's cheeses
There is much more than one cheese to discover.
The range includes Lyburn Gold, Winchester, Old Winchester, Stoney Cross, Lightly Oak Smoked and Garlic & Nettle.
The farm continues to receive recognition for its cheesemaking. At the 2026 British Cheese Awards, Old Winchester received Gold in the export category and a Silver award. Lyburn Gold, Garlic & Nettle, Lightly Oak Smoked and Stoney Cross each received Bronze.

A proper working family farm
Lyburn isn't a purpose-built visitor attraction. This is a genuine working farm with generations of farming history behind it.
The farm covers around 500 acres and has a herd of approximately 170 pedigree cows. Around half of the farm's annual milk production is turned into cheese.
During summer, the cows graze nearby fields. When conditions become too wet, they return indoors for winter.
The milk used for cheesemaking doesn't need to be transported elsewhere, and much of the electricity used in cheesemaking is generated using solar power.
Farm tours at Lyburn
Lyburn also runs occasional summer evening farm tours.
These can include a tractor and trailer ride around the farm, with visitors seeing areas including the reservoir, pumpkin fields and cows before returning for a cheese supper.
The 2026 summer tours are currently fully booked, so don't travel expecting to join one without arranging it directly with the farm.
