Description
Moors Valley Railway – Steam Train Adventures in Hampshire
Step aboard the Moors Valley Railway, one of the UK’s finest narrow-gauge steam railways, located in the heart of Moors Valley Country Park near Ringwood, Hampshire. This charming attraction is home to an impressive collection of 7¼″ gauge locomotives, featuring 19 working steam engines and two diesel locomotives, with a 20th currently being built.
Every visit to our railway promises fun for families, train enthusiasts, and anyone who loves a day out surrounded by the sights, sounds, and smells of real steam power. Many of the locomotives have been lovingly built in the Moors Valley workshop, continuing a proud tradition that began at the original Tucktonia Leisure Park in Christchurch.
One of the highlights is Tinkerbell, the first 7¼″ gauge engine designed for drivers to sit in rather than behind the locomotive. This groundbreaking design inspired many modern narrow-gauge trains and remains a firm favourite among visitors.
Founder Jim Haylock, whose lifelong passion for railways led him to create the Moors Valley Railway in 1980, has built an attraction that combines history, engineering, and pure enjoyment for all ages.
The railway offers a range of experiences, including birthday parties, school visits, corporate events, and private hire. For those who dream of being behind the controls, the Drive a Steam Engine Courses are a must-try.
The Standard Course includes a full day’s tuition, lunch, and the chance to drive a steam locomotive, with up to six guests invited to ride along. The Advanced Course takes things further, offering one-to-one instruction on engine preparation, cleaning, and operation, giving participants a true hands-on experience.
Both courses end with a certificate to commemorate your day — perfect as a memorable gift for train lovers.
