From Pre-Prep through to Prep School, boys are encouraged to develop confidence, curiosity and independence while exploring their interests across academics, sport, music, drama and the arts.
A Remarkable Setting for Learning
Few schools can offer such a unique location. Hidden behind the historic buildings of the Cathedral Close, the school opens out into large green spaces and impressive grounds.
The school’s games pitches sit beside the ancient city walls, with views towards the cathedral and surrounding countryside. Nearby, the River Itchen, water meadows and nature reserves provide wonderful opportunities for outdoor exploration and learning.
Just beyond the school gates are historic landmarks including Wolvesey Castle, St Catherine’s Hill and the South Downs Way, creating an inspiring environment where boys can learn both inside and outside the classroom.
A Well-Rounded Education
Education at The Pilgrims’ School focuses on helping each pupil reach their full potential. Boys are encouraged to develop academically while also exploring their creativity, sporting ability and personal interests.
Dedicated teachers support pupils as they build confidence, develop independence and approach learning with curiosity and enthusiasm.
The school welcomes boys from a wide range of backgrounds and beliefs, creating a friendly and supportive community where individuality is valued and every pupil can thrive.
Pre-Prep: A Wonderful Start to School Life
The Pre-Prep at The Pilgrims’ School offers an exciting and nurturing introduction to education for younger boys.
Reception classes are deliberately small to ensure a gentle transition from home or nursery into full-time school life. Experienced teachers and teaching assistants provide close support so that every child quickly settles, makes friends and grows in confidence.
Learning follows the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum, with a strong emphasis on learning through play and outdoor exploration.
As a recognised Forest School, pupils benefit from regular outdoor learning opportunities in the school’s gardens, riverside setting and woodland areas.
Inspiring Learning in Years 1 and 2
In Years 1 and 2, boys begin to develop greater independence while continuing to learn through creative and engaging topics.
Subjects are often taught through cross-curricular themes, encouraging curiosity and imaginative thinking. Lessons might explore topics such as space, dinosaurs, pirates or castles, helping to bring learning to life.
Core subjects including literacy and numeracy are taught in small groups tailored to each pupil’s abilities, while technology is integrated through interactive whiteboards, iPads and desktop computers.
A School Steeped in History
The Pilgrims’ School has deep historic roots connected with Winchester Cathedral, with origins tracing back to the Alta Schola around 676 AD.
The school moved to its present site in 1931, continuing its close association with the cathedral and its internationally renowned choir tradition. Today, choristers and non-choristers learn together, sharing the rich musical heritage of the cathedral.
The beautiful Pilgrims’ Hall, famous for its medieval hammer-beam roof, remains an important part of the school and attracts visitors from around the world.
Boarding and Preparation for Senior School
The school also offers boarding from Year 4, providing a supportive environment where boys can develop independence, responsibility and strong friendships.
Boarding life encourages pupils to become organised, confident and resilient while enjoying a welcoming and homely atmosphere.
Many families choose boarding as an excellent preparation for senior school life, helping pupils transition smoothly into the next stage of their education.
A New Chapter with Winchester College
In September 2025, The Pilgrims’ School entered an exciting new chapter through its merger with Winchester College. This partnership strengthens the long-standing relationship between the school, the college and the cathedral while expanding opportunities for pupils.
Together, these historic institutions continue to nurture the education and development of boys in one of the most inspiring learning environments in the country.
