Discover the Story Behind The Snakecatcher
The pub takes its name from one of the New Forest’s most fascinating local legends, Harry “Brusher” Mills. Known across the region as the famous New Forest snakecatcher, Brusher lived near Hollands Wood during the late 1800s and became well known for catching thousands of snakes across the forest.
Harry Mills was a true New Forest character. He lived a simple life in a small charcoal burner’s hut and became famous for catching grass snakes and adders throughout the area. Locals often spotted him enjoying a drink at the old Railway Inn, which is now known as The Snakecatcher pub.
His story remains a much-loved part of New Forest history and gives the pub its unique charm and identity today.
