Colour Beyond the Canvas – Matisse-Inspired Art Workshop in Winchester
Looking for a creative art workshop in Winchester? Colour Beyond the Canvas is a one-day workshop inspired by the expressive world of Henri Matisse. It takes place at The Colour Factory in Winchester on Sunday 29th November 2026.
Led by mixed-media artist and teacher Lorna Carmen McNeill, the day explores colour, movement, expressive drawing, painted papers and collage.
You don't need to be an experienced artist either. The workshop welcomes complete beginners through to experienced artists, with all art materials provided.
Colour Beyond the Canvas in Winchester
Matisse famously explored colour as a way to create energy, movement and emotion. Later in his life, his vibrant paper cut-outs introduced a completely different approach to drawing and composition.
This workshop takes inspiration from that playful process while encouraging you to develop ideas in your own way.
Rather than focusing on creating one perfect finished picture, the day is about experimenting, responding and seeing where the creative process takes you.
What Will You Do During the Workshop?
The day begins by working with a life model, using expressive drawing exercises to explore flowing lines, rhythm and movement.
You'll then introduce colour by creating your own painted papers using acrylics, inks and expressive mark-making.
These colourful papers become your creative palette. You'll cut, arrange and rework different shapes to develop vibrant collage compositions inspired by Matisse's process.
Throughout the workshop, you'll explore:
- Expressive life drawing
- Colour mixing
- Intuitive mark-making
- Creating painted papers
- Cutting and arranging shapes
- Collage
- Rhythm, balance and harmony
- Using colour to express movement and emotion
- It's an opportunity to loosen up creatively and discover what happens when drawing develops into colour, shape and collage.
Who Is the Workshop For?
